The world depicts Earth as a "resource planet" for an alien empire, where humans receive alien-granted abilities as indentured servants. Alden's "Rabbit" class offers mundane, service-oriented powers and constant availability for his alien master. The powers were initially granted to combat a corruption threat, but with that diminished, planets now have more autonomy, operating under a system of employment and emergency summoning, with no option to relinquish powers. The story emphasizes a coherently crafted world with realistic consequences and tragedies alongside moments of joy and growth.
