In 1459, the Roman Empire, after fifteen centuries, has vanished with Constantinople's fall to the Ottomans. The Byzantine world's final fragments teeter on the edge of oblivion, their collapse signaling the end of Roman dominion. The small Greek Principality of Theodoro, nestled in the Crimean mountains, faces inevitable destruction under the shadow of its conquerors. Dr. Nikos Karagiannis, a history professor, finds himself transported into the body of Theodorus, a third son of a disgraced house with bleak prospects.
